Florida’s Healthy Babies is an effort of the Department’s Health Equity Program Council, which focuses on helping all Floridians achieve health equity, or the highest level of health.

Though Florida has experienced declining morbidity and mortality rates, disparities persist and the Department is committed to achieving health equity and eliminating these differences. The Department has committed to action that goes beyond health care to address the social determinants of health and reduce racial disparities in infant mortality.

The Florida Healthy Babies Initiative represents the collective strength of partners including the Department, non-governmental organizations, institutions, agencies, associations, local communities, and individuals working together to improve the health and well-being of all Floridians.

In Columbia County, the infant mortality rates are still on the rise. Currently the rate is 9.9 deaths per 1,000 live births (2016, FL CHARTS). Columbia County had a total of 23 infant deaths between 2014 and 2016. Florida Health Babies in Columbia County is working to decrease the risks that lead to infant deaths.
